How Will LIV Golfers Qualify for Majors After Greg Norman's Massive Decision?

Today’s Top Tour Stories from Planet Golf News

Good Morning,

First up, let's talk about LIV Golf. The rebellious league has decided to drop its efforts for recognition from the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR). Why? Well, they believe the rankings don't accurately represent their mission, so they're waving goodbye to OWGR points. This decision has sparked some debate, especially among players like Talor Gooch, who feels it's a disservice to the players.

But that's not all for LIV Golf. International captain Mike Weir has confirmed that LIV Golf players won't be teeing off at the 2024 Presidents Cup. Yup, you heard that right. This exclusion isn't new, but it's definitely keeping the tension high between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour.

In other LIV news, there's been some drama surrounding Phil Mickelson's future in LIV Golf. As his playing contract nears its end, there are rumors swirling about what's next for Lefty. Will he continue to compete, or is it time to hang up the clubs?

Now, let's shift our focus to the upcoming Arnold Palmer Invitational. With top players like Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy in the mix, it's shaping up to be an exciting event. Scheffler, in particular, is making headlines for switching up his putter game. Will this change lead him to victory? Only time will tell.

And speaking of upcoming events, don't forget about the Puerto Rico Open! Set against a tropical backdrop, this tournament promises plenty of sun, sand, and of course, golf. With a stacked field of international players, it's anyone's game this weekend.

And let's not forget about the incredible stories that make golf so special. Take Lauryn Nguyen, for example. The daughter of Vietnamese refugees, she's set to make her mark at the Augusta National Women's Amateur tournament. Golf isn't just a game for her; it's a way to honor her family's journey and pursue her dreams.

But hey, it's not all serious stuff. We've also got Tiger Woods and Tom Brady hitting the links at the Seminole Pro-Member Golf Tournament. Let's just say their performance was... less than stellar. But hey, we can't all be pros, right?

There's never a dull moment in the world of golf. Keep swinging, folks! ⛳️

5 Upcoming: The Puerto Rico Open

The Puerto Rico Open is an annual golf tournament that is part of the PGA TOUR and is known for its tropical setting and fun atmosphere. The 2024 edition of the Puerto Rico Open is scheduled to take place from March 7 to March 10 at the Grand Reserve Golf Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. This event is the first of three consecutive additional events on the PGA TOUR that are played alongside a Signature Event.

The Grand Reserve Golf Club has been the sole host of all 16 editions of the Puerto Rico Open. It features a par 72 course that stretches 7,506 yards from the tips and is the second of four PGA TOUR venues to feature Paspalum grass[1]. Despite its length, the course does not solely favor long hitters, as it provides a comprehensive test of golf that rewards high-quality play.

The winner of the Puerto Rico Open will receive a two-year membership exemption through 2026, eligibility for THE PLAYERS Championship the following week, and exemptions into the PGA Championship and the 2025 edition of The Sentry. However, the event awards 300 FedExCup points to the winner, which is less than the standard 500 points for regular events. Notably, ShotLink technology is not utilized for this tournament.

The 2024 field includes a mix of international players, proven winners, and emerging talents seeking a breakthrough. Notable past champions include Viktor Hovland, Tony Finau, and Jordan Spieth, among others. The defending champion from 2023 is Nico Echavarria, who will be looking to defend his title, although no player has ever won back-to-back in Puerto Rico.
