Today’s Top Golf News in Three Minutes
Good Morning,
Golf’s never-ending soap opera continues, and this week’s episodes feature LIV Golf players knocking at the doors of the majors, Tiger Woods’ tournament making an eight-figure donation, and Rory McIlroy on a mission to reclaim glory. Buckle up.
First up, the US Open and British Open have ever-so-graciously decided to leave the door slightly ajar for LIV Golf players, offering them a pathway to qualify—just barely. The USGA is dangling a single exemption spot for the top three players, while the British Open has been a little more generous with five. It’s like letting someone peek inside a VIP party but not quite handing them a drink. Meanwhile, Adrian Meronk cashed in a big win in Saudi Arabia, inching his way towards Oakmont. As the drama between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf continues, the question remains: Are these leagues ever going to just get along?
Speaking of big money, Tiger Woods’ Genesis Invitational just dropped an eye-watering $8 million to help Los Angeles recover from recent wildfires. The tournament, usually held at Riviera, has been temporarily moved to Torrey Pines, with plans to return to its usual stomping grounds in 2026. It’s a rare moment where golf actually does something universally applauded—no controversies, no drama, just a massive donation to help those in need.
Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy is strapping on his armor for another showdown at the Genesis Invitational, hoping to ride the momentum from his recent Pebble Beach Pro-Am win. He’s got Scottie Scheffler in his sights, but he’s not alone—Shane Lowry and Tom McKibbin are also trying to make waves, while Hideki Matsuyama is aiming to go back-to-back despite some nasty course conditions. And speaking of those conditions, the Torrey Pines rough looks downright evil, with PGA Tour pros already whining about lost balls and impossible lies. Add in a flood watch, and we could be in for a tournament that resembles survival golf more than a proper competition.
Over in the land of LIV Golf, the party is gearing up in Adelaide, where Phil Mickelson is making his return from a shoulder injury, and Jon Rahm is expected to put on a show. The infamous “Watering Hole” on the 12th promises to be as chaotic as ever, with fans undoubtedly ready to douse anyone who makes an ace in a beer shower. Meanwhile, young gun Tom McKibbin has joined Rahm’s Legion XIII team, lowering their average age and making them a serious contender to take down defending champs Ripper GC. LIV may not be getting the TV ratings they want, but in Adelaide, at least, the spectacle is real.
And then there’s the ever-entertaining world of golf drama. Collin Morikawa threw some well-aimed shade at Lucas Glover for his long putter after Glover criticized AimPoint green-reading. Meanwhile, Graeme McDowell has a simple solution for slow play (spoiler: it involves playing in smaller groups, but good luck convincing the PGA Tour to cut down its field sizes). Max Homa is in his feelings, claiming that golf “does not like him at the moment,” which, if we’re honest, is a sentiment most weekend hackers can relate to.
Finally, as we inch closer to the 2025 Masters, conspiracy-minded golf fans have convinced themselves that Bryson DeChambeau is destined to win based on a wild statistical trend that includes his age, world ranking, and Augusta experience. Whether this prophecy holds up remains to be seen, but if DeChambeau starts quoting numerology in press conferences, we’ll know the hype has gone too far.
Until then, we wait for the next plot twist.

With a substantial purse of $20 million and a top prize of $4 million, the competition promises to be fierce. LIV Golf Adelaide - LIV Golf - The Grange Golf Club, Adelaide, Australia
The LIV Golf Adelaide tournament is set to take place from February 14 to 16, 2025, at The Grange Golf Club in Adelaide, Australia. This event marks the second stop on the 2025 LIV Golf League schedule, following the season opener in Riyadh. The Grange Golf Club, founded in 1926, will host the tournament for the third consecutive year, featuring a composite routing of its East and West courses.
The event is expected to draw around 100,000 fans, making it one of LIV's most-attended tournaments. The course will play as a par-72 at just under 7,000 yards, with the potential for low scores and exciting play. Previous winning scores have been in the high teens under par, and similar results are anticipated this year given the favorable weather forecast.
Notable players in the field include Jon Rahm, Tyrrell Hatton, Bryson DeChambeau, and local favorite Cameron Smith. The all-Australian Ripper GC team, led by Smith, will be defending their team title from last year. The tournament will feature LIV Golf's signature format of 54 holes with no cut, shotgun starts, and both individual and team competitions.
A highlight of the event is the famous "Watering Hole" at the 12th hole, known for its party-like atmosphere and enthusiastic crowds.
