Today’s Top Golf News in Three Minutes
Good Morning,
The 2024 TOTO Japan Classic came to an unforgettable close as Japan’s Rio Takeda claimed her first LPGA Tour victory after an intense, six-hole playoff against Marina Alex. This victory marked Takeda’s entry into the LPGA winner’s circle and secured her status on the Tour for next year. Rain had forced the tournament to wrap up after 54 holes, but the drama was far from over. Takeda, overcoming a three-shot deficit late in the game, eagled the 16th hole and birdied the 18th, catching up with Alex at 15-under and sparking the playoff. After five tightly contested holes, Takeda clinched the win with a final birdie on the sixth hole, a sweet end to an already stellar season that saw her win seven events on the LPGA of Japan Tour.
In another highlight for the LPGA, Nelly Korda was crowned Player of the Year, her first time earning this honor. Korda has been unstoppable, with six tournament victories this season, including a major. Even missing two events due to a neck injury couldn’t derail her streak, and she matched a record with five consecutive wins. As the LPGA season wraps up, Korda will be vying for one last title at the Race to CME Globe, hoping to end her impressive year on yet another high note.
Elsewhere, golf fans are buzzing about the latest news on Sergio Garcia’s possible return to the Ryder Cup. He has expressed a willingness to meet the European Tour halfway to make this happen, sparking excitement about a possible reunion with Team Europe. This comes amid increasing calls for cohesion in the sport, with former Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley warning that the game is “heading for a reckoning” if the PGA and LIV Tours don’t find a sustainable path forward.
Golfers are also watching the Race to the DP World Tour cards after the 2024 Challenge Tour Grand Final wrapped up, with Norway’s Kristoffer Reitan clinching the title and 22 players earning their spot on the tour for 2025. With up-and-coming talent and seasoned players in the mix, fans can expect a competitive season.
And on the fashion front, Charley Hull made waves this week by showcasing her latest look from Malbon Golf. Hull sported a bright red sweater and khaki skirt, proving that golf style is evolving toward a more relaxed, expressive vibe—a shift she’s enthusiastically championing.
With the LPGA’s TOTO Japan Classic and the upcoming CME Group Tour Championship, golf fans have much to look forward to. And with pros like Bryson DeChambeau surprising college fans and big discussions around players’ future tours and earning potential, it’s clear that golf is moving into an exciting, dynamic era.

TOTO Japan Classic - LPGA - Seta Golf Course, Shiga, Japan
The final round of the 2024 TOTO Japan Classic at Seta Golf Course in Shiga, Japan, delivered an exhilarating conclusion as Rio Takeda claimed her first LPGA Tour victory after an intense six-hole playoff against Marina Alex. The tournament was reduced to 54 holes due to a tropical storm that interrupted play on Saturday.
Takeda staged a remarkable comeback in the final round, overcoming a three-stroke deficit with just three holes to go. She eagled the par-5 16th hole and followed it up with a birdie on the 18th, which allowed her to tie Alex at 15-under par 201 and force the playoff.
The playoff showcased both players’ resilience and skill, as they matched each other shot for shot through the first five extra holes. They both birdied the first playoff hole and then made four consecutive pars. Ultimately, on the sixth playoff hole, played on the par-5 18th, Takeda secured her victory with a birdie while Alex settled for a par.
This win was particularly meaningful for Takeda, marking not only her first LPGA Tour title but also ensuring her status on the tour for 2025. It capped off an outstanding season for her, having already achieved seven wins on the LPGA of Japan Tour earlier in the year.
Haeran Ryu from South Korea finished in third place, just one stroke behind the leaders with a total of 14-under 202. Hana Wakimoto, who had led after the first two rounds, faced challenges in the final round, posting a 1-over 73 and finishing three shots back.
The TOTO Japan Classic concluded a four-tournament series in Asia for the LPGA Tour, which is set to return to the United States for the CME Group Tour Championship in Oahu, Hawaii, next week.
