Today’s Top Golf News in Three Minutes
Good Morning,
The world of golf is buzzing with stories that remind us just how dynamic this sport can be. From injury setbacks to groundbreaking moments, here’s a snapshot of what’s been making waves recently in the golf universe.
Tony Finau, beloved for his consistent play and amiable demeanor, has had to bow out of the 2024 Grant Thornton Invitational as he continues to recover from knee surgery. This marks his second missed event, following his absence at the Hero World Challenge. While fans will miss seeing him paired with Nelly Korda, Daniel Berger steps in to fill the spot. Berger, who’s back in form after a long recovery from back issues, is set to team up with Korda in this unique mixed-gender event. Finau, meanwhile, is eyeing a comeback at The Sentry in January, and we’re all rooting for him to return strong.
In other exciting news, Scottie Scheffler has dethroned Tiger Woods as Google’s most-searched golfer in 2024, ending Woods’ remarkable 20-year streak. Scheffler’s seven wins this year, coupled with a headline-grabbing arrest during the PGA Championship, have certainly kept him in the spotlight. Despite this shift in search trends, Tiger’s legacy remains untouchable, with Augusta National still the most Googled golf course—a testament to his enduring impact on the sport.
Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy is championing unity in a special televised match that pits PGA Tour stars against LIV Golf players. Set to pair with Scottie Scheffler, McIlroy will take on Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka. The match isn’t just about competition; it’s a gesture toward healing the rift that’s divided golf fans in recent years. Could this event pave the way for more collaboration between the tours? Both players and fans seem to hope so.
The competitive spirit is alive and well beyond just the pros. The PGA Tour Q-School is in full swing, offering a lifeline to 171 players vying for a shot at PGA Tour cards for the 2025 season. This intense, career-defining event at TPC Sawgrass promises to deliver drama and inspiration as dreams are either realized or deferred.
And speaking of dreams, Miyu Yamashita is living hers after dominating the LPGA Q-School to secure her spot for the 2025 season. Joining her are 25 other players, including the remarkable Japanese twins Chisato and Akie Iwai, whose family story and impressive skills add a heartwarming layer to the competition.
On the international stage, the Alfred Dunhill Championship at Leopard Creek is delivering its usual mix of stunning golf and breathtaking wildlife views. Defending champion Louis Oosthuizen is aiming for a repeat, while Ryder Cup hopefuls like Tom McKibbin are seizing this opportunity to make their mark.
From Tiger’s waning Google reign to Rory’s efforts to unite the sport, it’s clear that golf is in a state of evolution. With rising stars emerging, seasoned pros redefining their paths, and global competitions delivering thrills, there’s never been a better time to be a fan of this great game.

Major Golf Tournaments happening this week
Grant Thornton Invitational - Tiburon Golf Club - Naples, FL
Tony Finau has withdrawn from the 2024 Grant Thornton Invitational, which is set to begin on Friday at Tiburon Golf Club in Naples, Florida. Finau, who was originally paired with Nelly Korda, cited ongoing recovery from recent knee surgery as the reason for his withdrawal. This marks Finau's second consecutive tournament withdrawal, following his absence from the Hero World Challenge last week.
In a statement, Finau expressed his disappointment at having to miss the event, mentioning that playing with Korda in 2023 was one of the highlights of his year. He underwent knee surgery on October 15 to address a torn meniscus and clean up some cartilage.
Daniel Berger will replace Finau as Nelly Korda's partner for the mixed-gender event. Berger, who recently returned to competitive golf after an 18-month absence due to back issues, finished tied for second at The RSM Classic in his last tournament appearance.
Finau is now aiming to make his return to competition at The Sentry tournament in Maui during the first week of the new year.
